All the 2010 FIFA World Cup action in Durban will be within walking distance from our new Moses Mabhida Stadium, however there is much more to Durban than the Sporting Precinct and beaches. With this in mind you are invited to use our world class transport system that links to all areas of the city, and our main attractions. These include a new international airport situated north of the city, dedicated public transport lanes, an improved inner city circulation system, the new “People Mover” bus system, as well as a host of other projects all designed to ensure that transport within the city is effective and efficient.
Durban is also implementing a range of Intelligent Transportation Systems throughout the city, to maximise effective use of transportation systems within the city. These include a Public Transport Information Call Centre, and information kiosks providing commuters and tourists with travel options and information.
To monitor traffic and security incidents, Durban’s existing Road Network CCTV Monitoring and Surveillance system will be linked to the Intelligent Transport System, showing variable messages regarding accidents, traffic re-routing, etc.
A new railway station, Kings Park Rail Station, is being developed adjacent to the Moses Mabhida Stadium. This will provide easy access to the stadium and fan park, from the main north-south rail corridor.
PEOPLE MOVER AND BUS SYSTEM
The People Mover Bus & Inner City Distribution System will provide a safe, reliable and convenient mode of public transport to move people easily around the inner city and beachfront areas in air-conditioned comfort. These busses have also been equipped with disabled and pram access and CCTV cameras. Bus stop wardens offer help to disabled passengers requiring assistance, route and schedule information as well as security to all waiting passengers. The attractive, brightly- coloured buses travel through the city every 15 minutes and are a popular, fun way to travel around the city or along the beachfront.
Tickets
A single journey on the People Mover will cost R4.44 (ZAR) and a full-day will cost you R15.00 (ZAR).
Passangers who wish to change between one route and another are allowed to switch buses at the transfer station, free of charge.
Operating Hours
The Durban People Mover service runs daily from 06H30 to 23H00. These extended operating hours allow commuters greater freedom and access to Durban's entertainment and business areas.
For more information on routes and operating hours please consult our People Mover Website: durbanpeoplemover.co.za. In addition to the Inner City Distribution system, alternative bus services will safely take you to other areas within Durban.
Metered Taxis
Key 2010 zones within Durban including the airport, beachfront, city centre and other accommodation and entertainment zones will have official metered taxis in operation. Our city-registered metered taxis are clearly marked with a coloured sticker, assuring you of the quality and safety of the service you are getting from your taxi. Taxis that cover areas outside the key 2010 zones do not rove and therefore need to be called so that you can be picked up.
On arrival in Durban, all of our fans will be provided with contact details for approved metered taxi operators within the city, making getting around a simple affair.
Minibus Taxis
With their pumping tunes, and their co-driver hanging out the window making hand gestures indicating where the taxi is going, our Minibus taxis are hard to miss! This is one of the most common forms of transport that you’ll find in Durban. They are far less expensive than metered taxis, however stick to specific routes and tourists are therefore advised to find out details of these routes before using these services.
Driving Yourself
Our city centre is relatively small. All key World Cup locations are within walking distance from each other, but should you want to explore further afield, renting a car is a good option. Our roads in Durban are in excellent condition and well sign-posted – just remember, we drive on the left! As mentioned, there are a number of reputable car hire companies operating in Durban, however we advise you to book your vehicle early.
Car rental companies
Note that travel restrictions will be implemented on match days to minimise traffic congestion. Fans will be advised to make use of the park and ride facilities on these days.
Tour Operators
Durban has many options when it comes to guided tours. On arrival in Durban you will be provided with a list of registered tour guides to assist with your city travel arrangements.
Walking Around Durban
As all the 2010 action will be situated within the city centre and beachfront areas, walking is an excellent way to get around. We have created a number of walking routes, all of which will be well signposted to help you find your way around our 2010 and other central visitor attractions.
